Original Sin | 死んでもいい (1992)
Makoto, a young drifter, walks out of a train station and bumps into a young woman, Nami. Stunned by her beauty, he becomes obsessed and follows her to the real estate office where she and her older husband, Hideki, work. Makoto is quickly able to get a job from Hideki and thus begins an escalating tension between him and Nami, who he is determined to win over at any cost.

One of Takashi Ishii’s more subtle works, ORIGINAL SIN disguises itself as a simple romantic drama, taking its time to cement its character relationships and motivations before revealing a darker core. With a strong performance from the small cast, particularly from Shinobu Otake (A NIGHT IN NUDE: SALVATION) as Nami, and beautiful cinematography from Ishii’s longtime collaborator Yasushi Sasakibara (A NIGHT IN NUDE & FREEZE ME), ORIGINAL SIN is a high mark from Ishii’s already distinguished filmmaking career.

A Night In Nude | ヌードの夜 (1993)
Jiro lives in Tokyo and offers a stand-in service to anyone willing to pay. A woman claiming to be from Fukuoka enlists Jiro’s services, saying she wants to be shown around Tokyo. Jiro takes her for a lonely woman who just wants some company. What Jiro doesn’t realized is that she is on the run from her violent yakuza boyfriend and that he will be pulled into a risky situation whether he wants to or not.

Cited by many as Takashi Ishii’s greatest cinematic achievement, A NIGHT IN NUDE serves as a microcosm for the framing, style, and rain obsession included all throughout his filmography. Simultaneously haunting and mesmerizing, A NIGHT IN NUDE’s tale of two lost souls finding kinship even in the most desperate of circumstances is an undeniable showcase of a filmmaker working at the top of his game.

Angel Guts: Red Flash | 天使のはらわた 赤い閃光 (1994)
Nami, a photographer, remembers visions of her own horrific sexual assault when shooting images of a rape scene for a porno. Amidst her past trauma returning, she wakes up one morning inside of a love hotel with a dead body by her side and no memory of what transpired the night before. She finds a tape nearby that sheds some light on what truly happened the night before…

Toeing the line between Pink film and murder mystery, Ishii’s second standalone ANGEL GUTS film functions as a disturbing psychological portrait of someone who has been through extreme physical/emotional trauma while displaying the reverberations of such traumas.

Alone In The Night | 夜がまた来る (1994)
After and undercover cop is killed in the line of duty, his wife, Nami, is terrorized and brutally assaulted by yakuza who storm into her late husband’s funeral home searching for drugs they claim he stole. Grief stricken and traumatized, Nami attempts to commit suicide but is instead rescued by a seemingly-rogue yakuza. Shortly after, Nami begins on the path of revenge, not knowing it will cost her more than she could have ever bargained for.

Takashi Ishii’s take on the rape and revenge exploitation sub genre is as harrowing as it is stylish and at times, darkly beautiful. Yui Natsukawa’s performance as Nami is one permeated by a truly haunting quality, serving as a personification of ALONE IN THE NIGHT’s beating heart: brave and tragic.
